Games Done Quick’s Charity Speedrunning Marathon Kicks off This Sunday

Games Done Quick

Awesome Games Done Quick, a week-long speedrunning charity event run by, er, Games Done Quick, is set to kick off this weekend.

This difference is, for COVID-19 related reasons, the event will be taking place online, with speedrunners staying in their homes. But it promises to be every bit as entertaining as previous events and, best of all, AGDQ 2021 is raising money for charity.

In case you’re unfamiliar with speedrunning, the idea is to finish a level or, more often than not, an entire game in as little time as possible. And whether you love speedrunning or can’t wrap your ahead around someone wanting to skim a game, there’s a real art to it. It’s not just a case of being fast, many speedrunners exploit glitches or bugs allowing them to skip whole chunks of a game.

The charity Games Done Quick currently supports is Prevent Cancer Foundation. During the event, viewers will be able to donate online, with 100% of all donations going to the charity; last year’s event raised a whopping $3.16M for the organisation.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 will take place on Twitch, with the event kicking off on Sunday Jan 3th, 4:30PM GMT. Or, by clicking on the event schedule, you can find out what time it starts in your timezone.

You’ll be able to view the event through GamesDoneQuick.com, with a line-up across that includes Donkey Kong Country, BPM: Bullets Per Minute, Strider and many, many more, across a multitude of platforms. Even if you just dip into the event, we’re sure you’ll be gobsmacked by the speedrunning skills on display.
