I understand that in the Earth-Moon configuration, since the Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, any object within the Moon’s hill sphere would eventually decay down and crash into the Moon. Thus our Moon can never have another natural moon.
However, are there no moons in our system that are not in this configuration? And if there are – why don’t they have any natural moons of their own? Just coincidence?
